How may years have you raised Dutch? |
4 to 8 years |
What recognized varieties do you raise? |
Black, Chocolate, Gray, Tortoise |
What non-recognized varieties do you own? |
|
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class. |
I agree. I would like to see the "natural cross varieties" be accepted as options. Lilacs should be allowed! This would be beneficial for chocolate breeders. (: |
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed? |
I would like to see a "catch all" variety class (AOV) that would put new varieties into this "bucket" until the interest increases that they can stand alone. Why not allow other colors in an "other variety" class if they meet an approved standard description. Once the interest is such that the particular "proposed variety" has numbers that meet a certain threshold (to be determined) they could be voted on to move to their own variety. Just an idea so don't shoot me for this one.....(: |
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven. |
I think the jury is out on this still but I suspect the chin will help the steel. I have raised other chinchilla breeds and feel that it is a very beautiful color. |
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors? |
I don't believe so. Red to red would work best in my opinion. Not familiar with red in Dutch. |
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray? |
I have mixed feelings about this. Until there are others added (such as Gold) this wouldn't be needed. I would not vote in favor of this but rather an "AOV" class as a "catchall" class for new varieties. |
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings? |
I do think that adding varieties will add to poor showings at times but the question is will it benefit the Dutch breed overall? This is a tough question. If the true Steel breeders love steels then adding more varieties shouldn't impact the number of steels. The Steel Dutch's limiting factor is that it does not breed true and is a challenge to get the numbers. This also makes it fun to raise Steels! |
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before. |
I think you either love the Dutch or you don't and its the breed that would attract new breeders and not the specific variety. Just my opinion and I could be wrong. (: Having said that I don't see what the problem is with letting people try new varieties. If it brings a few new breeders all the better. |
