How may years have you raised Dutch?
8 to 15 years
What recognized varieties do you raise?
Black, Blue, Chocolate, Gray, Steel
What non-recognized varieties do you own?
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class.
I really don't know.
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed?
I am sure of that. I feel that six colors is more than enough. I originally picked Dutch because of the simplicity of the breed and the fact that at birth you knew about markings. I feel that if every color someone ended up with eventually became a recognized color it would lead to the colors not being support at the shows. Most of the shows I go to don't have all the colors represented, and having more colors will lead to less representation of all varieties at the shows.
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven.
I really don't know.
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors?
I don't know. I think a red Dutch would be pretty but I don't know if one could be developed and keep good type.
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray?
I just think it would confuse everyone to change the name of the variety. If it is working don't change it.
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings?
I think adding more colors will hurt all the colors and not just the Steel. I think adding more varieties will lead to more varieties with fewer rabbits being shown.
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before.
I don't think so. I have talked to people who said they chose Dutch because there was more than one color choice but not too many variables that made it difficult to know what they had. I think just leaving it alone will attract more people. If you have never had Dutch before six varieties is enough to pick from.
