How may years have you raised Dutch?
1 to 3 years
What recognized varieties do you raise?
Black, Blue, Chocolate, Gray, Steel, Tortoise
What non-recognized varieties do you own?
Gold, Lilac
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class.
I believe Lilac would definitely have been a better variety to add rather then the Chins. I think the chins are beautiful, and will definitely help the steels, but they are not a true Dutch, and it is not a natural color. A Lilac can be bred from two dutch, where as a chin had to be made.
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed?
NO WAY! The Netherland Dwarfs and Mini Rex are two of the most popular breeds. I think the interest in the Dutch would grow if we allowed for more varieties, such as an AOV class. Not only that, but we would have more freedom in our breeding program, instead of worrying about getting a color we can't show. I also believe that more colors means type will improve. How many times have you had the perfect Dutch, but it's the wrong color?
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven.
Yes, I think it definitely will. The standard calls for silver tipped steels, but we have bred for gold ticking. I think the chinchilla Dutch will help turn that around.
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors?
Not.. really? I think the red Dutch are beautiful, but they should be left for the AOV class. They don't really fit in with anything else.
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray?
If the chinchilla's are accepted, yes, I think it may be a good idea. EVENTUALLY. I think this would be a good idea if we add several different agouti colors. Maybe if we ever get up to three or four different agouti varieties, then we can add the class.
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings?
if anything, I think the chinchilla will help the steels. Either that, or the chins will just be another variety that will eventually die out. I can't see the chins being as popular as blacks or blues.
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before.
Yes it will!!! I say the more colors, the better. Because the more colors there are, the more people will be interested! I think it would be exciting to be up there with the mini rex and netherland dwarfs.
