How may years have you raised Dutch?
Over 1to 3years
What recognized varieties do you raise?
Black, Blue, Tortoise
What non-recognized varieties do you own?
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class.
The question is when you continue to add other breeds into the dutch just to get color is it even a DUTCH? I mean you start with a dutch then add a chin so now you have a 50% dutch. Then maybe you through is a black havana so you have a nice combination of dutch/havana/chin? Does not seem like that's the way I want to go. When your herd starts to get too cobby would you throw in a Himalayan to stretch it back out? So why add another breed just to get more breeds. I mean I know to get some colors they have added other breeds but there has to be an end to the additions.
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed?
I don't see any benefit to adding more colors. I mean we haven't even perfected the colors we have now.
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven.
I don't think it would.
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors?
No.
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray?
You are still diluting the dutch rabbit breed as a whole by adding colors.
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings?
Steels are hard to breed. That is the only reason you don't see them at shows in big numbers. People do this as a hobby and the every day breeder may not have the drive or desire to take the extra time it may take to successfully breed quality steels.
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before.
If we could create a color by breeding the colors we have successfully and breed it successfully then more colors may create more of a buzz. If we have to add other breeds into our herds to achieve other colors then I think the new breeders would soon find out the difficulty in keeping these new colors vibrant and would soon lose interest. As we all know from breeding dutch it is hard enough to breed show quality rabbits and by adding another obstacle in the mix would only make breeding dutch that more challenging.
