How may years have you raised Dutch? |
4 to 8 years |
What recognized varieties do you raise? |
Gray, Steel |
What non-recognized varieties do you own? |
|
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class. |
I think if we use other breeds to get colors, then it may end up messing up the lines we have now.I think that it could end up changing the breed, and not neccesarily for the better of the breed. I think if we start mixing colors, it will end up doing weird things to the colors over time. It's bad enough if you mix a black with a chocolate background with a blue; if we start doing this, we might end up with even more confusion in the colors, especially with new members who will become frustrated if it takes them too many breeding to produce a recognized variety. |
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed? |
I do NOT think that we should end up like Netherland Dwarfs or Mini-Rex. Even at regular shows, it can take a solid three hours to get through with only 6 varieties. No one will want to do dutch, especially the varieties that have to go last, if it takes that long. |
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven. |
I'm not sure. Form what I've heard, it might, but it could also just as easily end up making the color get even worse as time and generations go on. |
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors? |
NO> What would you breed it with? Blacks? Well, okay, but then you get someone who breeds that black with a blue, and maybe you'll get a blue or black, but one day you'll end up with something wired, like a red steel. |
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray? |
I'm not sure about this one. If you just had the chinchilla, maybe, but if you add one to it then other varieties will want to be recognized and it will take an hour to get through agouti senior bucks. |
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings? |
Recently, I've been seeing more and more steels, especially in youth, but I think these may hurt the steels just because these varieties are new and different. |
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before. |
I don't think so. Like I said, I think it will only decrease interest because it will take us 3 hours to get through one breed. |
