How may years have you raised Dutch? |
1 to 3 years |
What recognized varieties do you raise? |
Black, Blue, Steel, Tortoise |
What non-recognized varieties do you own? |
Blue Steel |
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class. |
Although fairly new to the Dutch breed, my parents have been raising them over 65 years now and I have seen many interesting facets over the years. I don't feel that the current varieties we have need any new changes at this time. As I understand it, the chinchilla dutch is a combination of 4 breeds total. I have enough issues just getting the current breeds to meet the standards of perfection. I would advocate a fawn or lilac as that occurs often. |
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed? |
No, but we need to master the current varieties first. In regards to whether or not it will benefit the club, I don't feel it will benefit us. Four breeds for 1 variety is a bit much. I don't need more animals of other breeds in my barn just to get this particular variety, though beautiful, just not feasible at this time.

Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven. |
No, it will not complement the grays or steels as you have to be able to maintain proper ring pattern on the grays and proper ticking on the steels.
|
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors? |
Not really and pardon my ignorance, but red dutch? isn't that a derivative of the torte variety?
|
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray? |
No, grays have a specific ring pattern and agouti's tend to have the wide band ring to them.
|
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings? |
Every show I've gone to this year has been consistently showing steels. I love it when I go to a show and see another steel breeder. More colors won't hurt the steels, but it may affect the other varieties. A steel is a steel.

Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before. |
Hard to say at this point in my young experience in raising dutch. I prefer to keep the current colors we already have.
