How may years have you raised Dutch? |
4 to 8 years |
What recognized varieties do you raise? |
Gray |
What non-recognized varieties do you own? |
|
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class. |
I don't like that. I see so many people at shows bringing animals to the table to find out what variety they are. Most of the time they are NO variety. What you are saying opens a variety for them. |
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed? |
When I think of this issue, I think of mini lops and the explosion of new colors. But my impression of the mini lop colors is there are so many they are not really different from one another. It seems if you have an animal that should have a blue or lilac hue, and got a brown hue, it was made into a variety. I don't believe this is the case with Chinchilla especially. Chinchilla is a LONG established variety in many breeds and breeds of it's own. Red is a basic color of many breeds. I definitely want to be careful about getting carried away, but we are a long way from that. |
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven. |
It will help ring color, but how will it affect the gold? TBD. |
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors? |
|
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray? |
I don't think we are there yet. If our intention is to create chinchilla, then lynx, then blue chinchilla, etc.. then we might need to consider that. But this is where we are definitely getting carried away. |
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings? |
yes! but how serious of a concern is that? I show gray, for example. I was the only breeder for several hundred miles (in AZ), and may be again in OK. I love my grays and haven't let that affect my choice. |
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before. |
The markings scare off new breeders. I don't think the body color has anything to do with it. |
