How may years have you raised Dutch? |
8 to 15 years |
What recognized varieties do you raise? |
Black, Blue, Gray, Steel, Tortoise |
What non-recognized varieties do you own? |
|
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class. |
I do not like the idea of adding other breeds of rabbits. I get enough white tipped ears from someone adding a REW something (florida, petite, polish, whatever!) I have seen people breed chocolates to blues and getting VERY nice typed and marked Lilac's. If someone wants to make another color, I would suggest using the 6 dutch colors now, do not add in anything REW!! |
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherlands Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed? |
I do NOT want our club to be like the mini rex or dwarfs...it is HORRIBLE having that many colors. People need to work on the type of the colors they already have. They also need to work on eye color, which seems to be going VERY light on chocolates and torts. |
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven. |
IF and I don't have any experience in breeding chins, they MAY help with the steels. The steels are TOO brassy now. I raise steel as my main color now after many years at torts. I have found that the older animals go very brassy. The chin color will make them more of a gray tipped steel instead of a gold tipped steel. |
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors? |
Egads! NOOOOOOOO. I can only imagine an inexperienced breeder not knowing anything about Dutch breeding a Red to a Tort, or even better....a chocolate. |
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray? |
I think Agouti would be a more standardized word. They use it for all of the other breeds, it needs to be a standard color across the board. |
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings? |
I think the reason steels are down is because people have not been told how to "make" a steel. It is something that I learned how to do about 3 years ago. The information out on how to improve or "make' varieties is something that is not known to the inexperienced breeder. |
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before. |
I think if people were interested in "other" colors, they need to go to another breed. The dutch are STRONG, we consistently have huge numbers at ARBA conventions and National Dutch Shows. If you accept more colors the original colors are going to fade and it will be a real shame. We have almost 80 years in our breed why change what works! |
