How may years have you raised Dutch?
1 to 3 years
What recognized varieties do you raise?
Black, Blue, Chocolate, Gray, Steel, Tortoise
What non-recognized varieties do you own?
When using other breeds of rabbits in the development of these new colors, it will take many years to get animals that consistently show a good Dutch type. What about the colors we could have just crossing the varieties we already have? Lilac Dutch for example were very popular back in the days of the AOV class.
I think it is bad to cross colors because all the varieties will be all mixed up and then that takes good color away from good one. For example: Grays, if you breed a gray to a blue you will normally get a gray with good surface color but no rings. When these grays are winning over good colored grays that have good surface color and good ring definition makes the breeder(me) with good colored grays, that show every band, upset. I'm not a sore loser or any thing but I do think this is wrong. Also not alot of (breeding dutch) judges know what good color is, so I think pictures of good colored grays need to be added into the standard of perfection. Also on good colored gray, they get faulted on brassy bellies but that's because they have good rings compared to bad colored grays with no rings and no belly color.
If we start adding new colors of Dutch to the Standard will we get carried away with the entire thing? for example, the Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-Rex. Will this benefit our club or the Dutch breed?
I do think we will get carried away.
Will the Chinchilla Dutch complement the Gray and/or Steel varieties? This would still need to be proven.
I really think the chins will ruin the grays. We will get more bad colored grays, that beat the good colored grays. Also this will hurt that steels to because this will add more ticking to steels and we will be showing (not steels) but really bad chins.
Would the Red Dutch complement any other colors?
I think if the red dutch are added it will not hurt any variety as much as the chins because with the chins you know people will breed them to grays and that will hurt the grays. With the reds, what could you breed them to? So I think they really couldn't hurt.
Instead of adding more classes of Dutch to be judged, would it be better to have an agouti class in place of the Gray?
No I think that is a very bad idea.
At many shows the number of Steels shown is not very good. Will more colors hurt the Steel numbers even more? Plus will it add to having more varieties with poor showings?
I think the steels are coming around again. The same thing was said about the torts a long time ago but now look there a very popular variety now. I love the steel so at least one Dutch breeder will still be breeding them.
Having more colors of Dutch may just add interest from people who haven't raised Dutch before.
I do think adding more colors will add interest but still we need to make sure we don't get out of hand.
